Woke up in the night and had to ask for painkillers in a voice which I thought was a polite whisper, but which brought the ward sister back 30 seconds later with a shot of morphine. Shouty patient was quiet but instead we had old lady:

OL:WHERE AM I?
NURSE: YOU'RE IN HOSPITAL,DEAR!
OL: I DIDN'T COME HERE TO BE EXPERIMENTED ON!
N: BUT YOU'VE ONLY HAD AN X-RAY!

and so on. She spent the night shouting for help in a very dramatic 'oh God, save me!' way. It is like being incarcerated with a very bad playwright. However, she is 90, blind and evidently a bit bonkers as well, so one must have some tolerance. She is now arguing with the doctor.

Because the drs sit near me, I now know we all have LJ-y handles. We are: Appendix, Other Appendix, ECG, and Gastric Person. I have one, too.

I happened to read about your fall. Get well soon. You have much sympathy from Josette and I.

I didn't know you rode. How long's that been going on?

best,

Liz - very relieved to hear the damage is minimal, and that your neighbours are keeping you entertained.

I assume you'll be cutting out the horseplay in future???

Take care

Al and Josette: thanks! I have ridden thru'out my life but intermittently. Had not been on a horse for ages. Horse is elderly and placid, but s/thng, don't know what, freaked him and he shied and bolted. Took me by surprise.

Neil: not allowed riding or contact sports for 3 months. Nearly asked if sex counts but your Sarcasm comment was still fresh in my mind...

Liz - I can commiserate re the ban on contact sports. I'm back at the football in a full-on capactity now, but I was out of it for a good seven months after doing my ankle. It's very frustrating. As, I can imagine, it would be re the sex too...

Take it easy, Dobbin

Good luck in getting back into the saddle quickly, in that case. Josette broke a few ribs (and fractured her hip) when her horse bolted in the woods a few years ago, and I know how painful that was for her. When they're going to bolt, they're going to bolt. I've been quite lucky with falls to date: by far the worst things that have happened to me with horses have been while putting the saddle on...:-(

Ow! Poor J. She has my sympathies.

I have been bolted with twice, but the only time I've fallen off before was when the horse was walking!

Recover quickly! My grandma had a former ballerina in her ward one time she was in hospital. The lady would dance around the beds doing demi-pliets and graceful arching moves, the nurses would have to coax her back to bed by leading her in a mini-pied piper/lord of the dance style. She also had a screamer, known as 'The Screamer', it's obligatory!

wow! but good for her.

I have found that the past few yrs of yoga have been really helpful during this, ditto the dance and tai chi, because I can isolate bits of me so as not to strain others!

Hugest commiserations, Horse Girl. Console yourself by looking up a biography of Cole Porter and reflecting that things could be worse ... Seriously, I hope you get better real soon, and look forward to reading the fictitious version of these events in a forthcoming Williams novel. - Ben Jeapes

Hey Liz,

Just heard about your accident with the horse. Glad to hear that it is not that serious serious, but gutted to hear that it's hurting so much.
I also have to say that engaging in country pursuits is a hell of a way to get your hands on opiates. Why din't you jus go see yo man?

Get better soon,

Charles

(Just back from a weekend on Long Island ...)

Was alarmed to read of your dramatic plight. Luckily modern medicine had advanced some distance beyond cupping and leeching -- these days the leeches are sterile. Much sympathy, hope you get out of there soon (hospitals are Not My Favourite Places, even without bonkers bed-neighbours), and hope your spleen or whatever isn't too badly broken!
