OK, you can get the hard drive out and get the data off with the assistance of your local IT expert. After that, seek a new laptop and investigate simple backups onto an external drive (I know, I know, hindsight is 20/20).
I would recommend a mac though, the learning curve is very gentle, and they do tend to last a lot longer than PCs...
