Father's 85th was celebrated at a pub lunch in Newent, a small Gloucestershire town remarkable for nothing except the fact that it is currently holding an Onion Fair, which means that every shop (including the real estate agents) has a window display which features onions in beach scenes. They had little faces drawn on them in marker pen: onions in deck chairs with shallot children in tow, onions in dark glasses, onions in boats. Surreal.

Today, I went to the dentist for the first time in 2 years and discovered that my mouth is in fine shape, luckily, and that despite having a Scottish name, my new dentist is Chinese. Had a long conversation about Chinese detective fiction.

I think I once passed through Newent on a bus from Gloucester to a colleague's wedding in Ross on Wye. I remember wondering what happened there, although I never thought of onions! You are fortunate to be able to celebrate with your parents in a pub. My father was so dysfunctional that he could ruin any celebration, and he was fervently against alcohol, so much so that when in my twenties I bought a bottle of wine he did not speak to me for several days. My mother did not have much room for celebration as he descended into dementia, although I did once get her into the Sir Charles Napier (http://wildbadger.livejournal.com/3556.html) in Brighton after he died.

It's quite likely you did pass through Newent, since it's near both. I know the Napier well! It was never one of my locals but I have friends who are regulars.
