Dammit. Via LJ, I've just learned that fantasy author David Gemmell has died. I didn't know David well, but I met him on various occasions and he seemed like a lovely man.

57 years old. Fucking hell, is all I find myself able to say to this.

Damn shame. I never had the opportunity to meet him, but I've loved his books since I first discovered him in the 80s.

That's too young. I just found out a friend of mine has a brain "mass" next to his frontal lobe. Enough, already.

David Gemmel was responsible for my first commercial writing break in 1984. He had just published his first novel for Century and I got the commission (with my then writing partner, Gordon Paterson) to design and write the computer game for Century. This led to our big break, to do the Fourth Protocol game for Century Hutchinson as it became.

David and I were interviewed on BBC radion Kent, we both lived locally, which was the first time we met. Computer games were a new thing at the time.

I understand he was a very sick man; he had a quadruple heart bypass and died two weeks later. What with him and Jim Baen, I am feeling a bit shell shocked. I am 54 next month.
