Pug

The cat, Pug, is not well. He has retreated to the dog basket (whether this is a final 'fuck you' to the dogs, I don't know). There is a nasty, bloody discharge coming from one eye and he is wheezing. He's not eaten for a few days (apart from a portion of duck because, duh, no one's going to turn that down). The dogs are all sitting around staring at him mournfully; they are good when someone is ill, no matter what their species is.

Cat is 18. I have a feeling this might be it, but if he lasts through the night we're going to the vet tomorrow.

Oh shit. Sounds like it might be an abscess near the eye -- does he go out and pick fights with other cats?

(If it's an abscess there's a chance you'll get him back from the vet alive, but wearing an eye patch.)

The wheezing is not a good sign, though.

Good thoughts from me and the boys.

Much sympathy..at 18, there's a chance that he won't be long for this world. I'll cross my fingers and hope it's just an infection, but I'll warn you: not eating is a Very Bad Sign in most cats.

Warm vibes for Pug, and the rest of you all.

Thank you, everyone. He doesn't normally fight with the other cats (we have a couple more, though I haven't seen one of them for about 4 days. They're semi-wild). There aren't any other cats around here except (allegedly, based on a sheep killing and a pawprint) something Very Big, which would probably prove terminal if Pug ever encountered it.

I've had a lot of cats over the years and this does not feel very good to me - you know how they suddenly seem to go downhill? This feels like that.

However, he is still asleep in the dog basket so I will leave him there overnight.

I hope that your intuition proves wrong in this case and that Pug's condition is treatable. Or failing that, I wish him an easy and painfree ending.

It's so hard when they start failing. I couldn't face having more cats after our two old ladies passed away. Good luck with your trip to the vet.

All the best for you and Pug. That is so touching about the dogs.

Nothing good to say about the symptoms, so nothing to say except we're thinking of you, and so forth. One of the reasons I'm so big into the Adoration of the Barry is that it's so new having a young & vigorous cat around; pre-B I had two elderly girls who just failed slowly, so I do so know the kind of night you're facing. Poor Pug, poor you; I hope the morning brings better news, but...

Sorry about his condition. I wish him a quick healing, but if that is not to be, may it be a relatively painless passing.

Sometimes I wish they could live as long as we want them to. It's hard to say good-bye to a friend you've had for 18 years.

Oh dear! You've been so supportive of what Tegan's going through and now it's my turn. Alexandra, Tegan, and I wish you and Pug the best.

Furry, finicky, flighty, but still family.

Folks, thanks so much. I really appreciate your good wishes.

Pug has survived the night, though he moved dog baskets, thereby confounding the dog whose basket it normally is (dog is easily fazed, though). The dogs spent the night with us, as if to give him some space.

He was out in the garden first thing, but I now can't find him. I'm going to have a look in a bit.

I was wondering how he is.
I recognise that feeling that you were talking of, having seen our two oldest cats reach the end.

Sorry to hear about Pug - a noble cat needs every comfort in the his life - hopefully not the last days of his life.

I do hope he pulls through from this setback
