The new laptop has arrived. However, I can't get it to work: it seems to be stuck on the numerical keyboard, so it won't let me input my registration information and go any further. I have called the helpline and they think it's a mechanical fault (the light isn't coming on). If anyone has had experience of this, let me know.

Customer services are 'at lunch.' I will have to send the thing back if we can't resolve it, which means another week's wait due to work commitments out of Brighton next week. These things are indeed sent to try us.

UPDATE Ye ancient method of switching it off at the mains has worked: now it lets me use Roman letters, but not the numbers, so I can't enter ISP details. Still, it's a faint improvement. If it doesn't sort itself out, I'm taking it in next Thursday to get the keyboard checked.

Some while ago, a friend and I were discussing various forms of luck. I have luck with places to live, and with men (give or take relationships with a couple of arseholes, but haven't we all), and generally with my career, so it seems curmudgeonly to complain about my lack of techno-luck. My friend, OTOH, has luck with houses, money and surviving car crashes.

Hold down the "fn" key (bottom left of the keyboard) and hit "F6" (num lock). You need to hold down "fn" to get access to the alternate functions of the function keys (such as num lock, which is the alternate function of F6).

Alternatively, check the keyboard mode -- if the menu bar at the top of the screen is showing anything other than a union flag or stars'n'stripes you've got some weird language mode loaded which might be screwing things up.

Thanks very much - I'll try this as soon as it stops installing what it's installing.

Keyboard mode is on British. We tried a couple of operations but they didn't work - I don't think that was one of them, though.

Just what I was going to suggest, but ye beat me to it.

Good luck with getting the issue fixed, Liz.

Liz,if the above advice doesn't work, demand REPLACEMENT IMMEDIATELY (Caps deliberate). Mac are a nightmare. THey will promise constant fixes until you are almost out of warranty. My last ibook spent 9 out of its first twleve months beingn"fixed".

By law you can demand money back now without argument.

And thanks for this, too - Cancom say that an engineer is going to be in the shop next week, so have arranged for me to take the keyboard in.

Nightmare, though! Poor you.

A big THANK YOU! Num lock is now doing what it says on the tin and the light comes on.
