The presence of a house guest and people coming for dinner finally made us do something about the vast sideboard sitting in the middle of the dining room. We spent most of the afternoon shifting furniture, cleaning (me: 'You can tell how often I dust.' Houseguest: 'What is this dusting of which you speak?'). Then we discovered a nearly-empty bottle of sherry and drank it for medicinal purposes.

Anyway, the dining room looks great and everything fitted in. I woke this morning to a large shiny object in the sky - have no idea what this thing is, but it makes the sky blue. For a fucking change, I might add. Parents: still no l'eau. However, their neighbours are being fantastic and bringing water round (dad has re-distributed some of this to an even older neighbour round the corner). Both Glos and Tewkesbury have experienced vandalism and looting, just like in the Blitz, and there is a general feeling in this household and beyond that hey, we're as liberal as the next folks, but a quick spray with hot lead would do some people the world of good.

Looting, after everything they've been through already? I think you're right about the hot lead...

A crossbow would be quicker. No need to heat the ammo.

I had never had sherry (save as low quality cooking sherry, with salt) until fairly recently, when a high-end inn served it to us with dry, crumbly cranberry scones smothered with sweet butter from a local dairy.

I don't think we ate anything else for mid-meal until we left that inn, and I distinctly recall snitching a few scones for consumption after supper with a nightcap--the bottle was in our room as a complimentary offering.

So.... good....

"Then we discovered a nearly-empty bottle of sherry and drank it for medicinal purposes."

This sounds like a fantastic opening line for a story.

Shooting has always been the traditional punishment for looting.

That's letting the side down in a big way. Glad to see your father sharing the water with people less fit.

We were right to take you as an inspiration in 1993 and 2001.
