On Sunday, my mother gave me half a shawl. It dates from the 1840s and it's a cotton paisley affair, quite large and rather ornate, with a small silk fringe.

THe other half was taken out to New Zealand when a section of my mum's family emigrated during the 19th century: they cut the shawl in half as a memento for each branch of the family. Now, I'm hoping that some Kiwi person will turn up with the other bit, like those Medieval romances in which someone cuts a ring in two.

Have you framed it? We have some lovely framed kimono sleeves from [livejournal.com profile] chilperic's family.

Category of ballads known as "broken token" songs - which I always thought was too good a name to waste. Yours is a great version.

That's great!

Fjm, no, I haven't framed it - it's huge. I will probably wear it instead.
