We went up mob-handed to the Blue Posts writers' group last night - a pleasant evening. Deirdre's husband Nick came with us: he's a sports correspondant for the Times and wants to expand his writing horizons a bit, but in turn it's interesting for the group - there's one journalist there already. We're hoping to drag Lynne Truss up there at some point.

We ended up not in the Blue Posts, but in a nice pub called The Champion, with rows of stained glass windows depicting various sporting champions. Looks Edwardian. On emerging, I discovered that this is in a street almost opposite the Oxford St Borders - [personal profile] fastfwd, may I suggest that if we get tired of the Ben Crouch (which a lot of people can't handle because of the sheer noise), Team Borders considers this place or the Blue Posts itself? We got a whole row of seats in the non-smoking section upstairs, which adjoins the smoking bar for those who indulge, and is quiet. No music! And both are actually closer than the BC.

Live Journal was represented by [personal profile] rozk and it's always fun to talk to her. Some Buffy was discussed - but also opera and Offenbach.

A little plug here for PRAYER CUSHIONS OF THE FLESH, as Robert Irwin was also there: http://www.sfreader.com/read_review.asp?book=84

Otherwise, I have been editing DARKLAND, and have just finished another round of edits for SNAKE AGENT. I've also been making progress on BLOODMIND, the next novel for Macmillan: about 220 pp in so far, but a lot of editing will be needed. Connecting three very different story strands is also a challenge, but a good one.

Reading: Ian McLeod's HOUSE OF STORMS, which is excellent. Occasionally you read a book you wish you'd written. This is one of them.

The Anti-Social Behavioural Orders tsar is under investigation after she made a foul-mouthed after-dinner speech to a group of police officers.

Whilst I myself have the mouth of a sailor*, I rarely curse during formal dinners and I'm not in charge of the country's code of civilised behaviour.

* unfortunately, the sailor wants it back

Starting the word count again...

I began this novel back in the winter, then had to put it on the back burner for other reasons, and have now returned to it:
