Our boxes are all covered--they're *slightly* more attractive that way, and more importantly, it makes it harder for the cats to throw litter all over the place. I do like the idea of building covers for them, though. We could frame in the upstairs one, and it would keep the area cleaner, and maybe even keep the dogs out. hmm.
