The possibly bad news: I am still trying to reach Charles' son, who was supposed to be in Thailand for Xmas. He is not answering his cellphone.
However, I don't know whether he was even there at the time of the earthquake: he might just not be answering his phone. I have tried the helpline, but they just direct me onto the Thai Embassy, who don't seem to be answering either. I am not going to panic about this until I find out for sure whether he was even in the area or not.

In lighter news, I am now back from Gloucester, via Glastonbury. Arrived in Glastonbury yesterday to find the aftermath of chaos: Jack Russell bitch (a) on heat (b) escaped and (c) located presence of local beagle hare-coursing pack. I leave you to examine the consequences. But who wants a mouldy old hare when the canine equivalent of a teenage siren is on offer?

Otherwise, everyone has had a fairly dreadful Christmas: Charlie says that he simply stuck a notice on the door that read "BAH HUMBUG. NOW FUCK OFF" and spent the day watching old war movies.

Those that I know are glad that 2004 is over and given the last couple of weeks, somewhat fearful of what 2005 will bring. Optimistic, though, in
spite of it all. Wishing all of you a happy new year.

I've got my fingers crossed that Charles's son wasn't in Thailand. Fortunately, my stepmother's family is from the east coast, and it was the west coast that got hit, so her people are safe. As horrible as the tragedy is there, I'm selfishly glad that Pen doesn't have to worry about her family in Thailand while taking care of my father and baby brother.

I had black-eyed peas on New Year's Day for good luck, just as I did last year, and I couldn't help reflecting that if last year was the year I got with good luck, I'd hate to see what things would have been like with bad luck.
