We had the day off yesterday, so spent the morning with a chainsaw and the woodpile before coming back into town for the Japanese film crew, who in the end, blew us out, so we escaped to the woods for an hour.

On leaving the house, I saw a small dark shape unmoving in the road. Any cat owner will understand my reaction. Stopped car, turned around at nearest possible point, foot on accelerator, raced back, to discover Sid peacefully sunning himself in the yard and a large pile of horse shit in the shadows of the road. T was scathing: 'I hope you sent its spirit on,' he said. However, Sid has done something to either a paw or shoulder as he is limping.

Dog whined and cried and howled in the car. No, not the new dog - she's fine. This is the German Shepherd who, every time we take him anywhere, reminds us of why we don't take him anywhere more often. He panics at being taken somewhere, and he panics at being left at home, or in the car. New dog regards him with mild amazement: why are you making such a fuss?

Back at home, Sid marched lop-sidedly in and announced that he was fed up of eating in the hall and wished to take supper in the kitchen as usual, despite the presence of vast dog. And he did, with T holding Bear's collar. She made what a friend described as 'that high pitched noise' and ignored her own dinner, Sid being far more interesting.

Scene: last night, front room. Cat is on my lap, new dog is on floor.

DOG: I think you are really, really, like, cool! Can I be your friend?

CAT: Fuck. Off. Now.

DOG: I think I really, like, kinda love you. Let me wash your ears!

CAT: I MEAN IT! FUCK OFF!

DOG: Don't you like me??

CAT: HUMAN! I REQUIRE ASSISTANCE! NOW!!!

DOG: Look, if I just whuffle you a bit - I know you'll like it!

CAT: THIS IS INTOLERABLE! [WHALLOP!}

Dog retires, injured and whimpering.

Oh dear. Dog is now 2 years old, so if the cat lives, we have another 6 years, at least, to go through.
